Student Government Association (S.G.A.)
Moderator for school-wide SGA: Ms. Kathy Blais
Membership: Students interested in being school or class leaders, and who maintain high academic and disciplinary standards, are invited to run for office. Officers are elected each year.
Description:SGA student leaders are responsible for coordinating many events throughout the school year, including fundraising efforts, spirit days and pep rallies, and homecoming events. Meetings are held during the lunch period on the first and third Thursday of each month.
School-wide (or 'Big') SGA oversees and monitors all school-wide activities.
Incoming freshmen will elect officers shortly after school begins.
ARTICLES AND BYLAWS PASSED BY THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIACTION OF FATHER LOPEZ.
We, the students of Father Lopez Catholic High School in order to develop attitudes of and practice in good citizenship, arouse the spirit of loyalty toward the school, extend morale and the spirit of good fellowship throughout the student body, promote harmonious student-faculty relationships, develop leaders and intelligent followers, provide a student forum of the expression of student opinion, provide the orderly direction of student activities, assist in the workings of the school, seek the development of a spirit of cooperation, good will, and better understanding with other high schools, develop opportunities for participation in community service and other relations, and promote the general welfare of the school, do ordain and establish this Constitution of the Student Government Association of Father Lopez.
ARTICLE I: NAME
The full name of this organization shall be the Student Government Association of Father Lopez.
ARTICLE II: MEMBERSHIP
The student body shall consist of every student registered at Father Lopez who will elect Student Government members to represent them.
The Student Government Association shall consist of four Student Government Officers. These offices shall include the following: Student Body President, Student Body Vice President, Student Body Secretary, and Student Body Treasurer. The Student Government Association will also include four Class Officers from each class. (These offices shall include, for example: Senior Class President, Senior Class Vice President, Senior Class Secretary, and Senior Class Treasurer.)
ARTICLE III: NOMINATION AND ELECTION
Elections of Student Government Officers will be held the fourth quarter for the school year.
An individual running as a Student Government Class Officer must have a petition signed by 20% of his or her class and four teacher recommendation. The candidate must currently be enrolled with the teachers completing the recommendation. The teacher recommendation will remain confidential.
An individual running as a Student Government officer must have a petition signed by 5% of the entire student body and four teachers recommendation. The teacher recommendation will remain confidential.
There will be campaign speeches and campaigning. Voting will be by secret ballot. If there is not a majority vote for a candidate, a run-off election will be held. The majority vote is defined by 51%.
Newly elected Student Government Officers shall shadow the incumbent officers prior to their swearing in at the end of the fourth quarter.
The term of office shall be four quarters.
ARTICLE IV: VOTING FOR STUDENT GOVERNMENT OFFICERS AND CLASS OFFICERS
The election of Student Government elections will take place in the fourth quarter of the school year.
Eligible votes are to include Father Lopez student, teacher and staff.
ARTICLE V: QUALIFICATIONS OF STUDENT GOVERNMENT OFFICERS AND CLASS OFFICERS
i. The candidates for President and Vice President of Student Government must be members of the junior class at the time of their candidacy. The candidates for Secretary and Treasurer of the Student Government must be members of the sophomore or junior class at the time of their candidacy.
ii. All officer candidates must have a 3.0 GPA and no F in any subject and matter and be in good discipline standing
iii. All candidates must declare their intending to run by the deadline date in order considered a candidate.
iv. All Student Government Officers will adhere to the Student Government Code of Conduct.
v. If the deadline for nomination has past and only one person has been nominated for one particular office, that person may run unopposed.
vi. Officers may hold no other office in any other club or organization at Lopez during their year as a Student Government Office.
vii. Candidates who have not fulfilled a leadership role will not be eligible to fun for Student Government
Section 2: Class Officers
i. The candidates shall be chosen from their respective classes.
ii. All candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 and no F in any subject to be eligible to run for office.
iii. All candidates must be in good discipline standing
viii. All candidates must nominate themselves prior to the deadline date to be considered a candidate.
ix. If the deadline for nomination has past and only one person has been nominated for one particular office, that person may run unopposed.
ARTICLE VI: DUTIES OF OFFICERS AND REPRESENTATIVES
The Student Body President shall subscribe to the oath of office, administer the oath of office to other Student Government members, plan the agenda and preside at all meetings. The President shall preserve order at all meetings. The Presidents duties also include each of the following: call special meetings with the approval of the sponsor, suggest the need to form committees, preside at assemblies when asked to do so, represent the government at functions, be present at all government functions, be responsible for daily announcements, and cast a vote in all motions.
The Student Body Vice President shall: perform the President's duties if the President is absent, see that all committees function properly, perform any duties designated by the President, be present at all Student Government functions, be responsible for daily announcements, and cast a vote in all motions.
The Student Body Secretary shall take minutes and keep records of the minutes of all meetings, take attendance at meetings, act as President in the absence of the President and Vice President, perform all correspondence, be responsible for updating any and allow all Student Government Documents, send notice for all regular and special meetings, be present at all Student Government functions, be responsible for daily announcements if the President is absent, see that all committees function properly and cast a vote in all motions.
The Student Body Treasurer shall: keep a record of funds; submit check requests and deposit vouchers as necessary, make a report at all meetings, be present at all Student Government functions, be responsible for all daily announcements if the Vice President is absent, oversee the demerit system and cast a vote in all motions.
The Class officer shall: represent his or her class in all activities of the Student Government, report the activities of the Government to his or her class, be present at all Student Government functions, oversee committees and cast a vote in all motions.
The non-voting members shall: represent his or her class committee or club to the Student Government and report the activities of the Student Government back to his or her non-affiliated party. Non-voting members shall include and Father Lopez student not currently holding an office with the Student Government Association.
ARTICLE VII: OATH OF OFFICE
All voting members Student Government Officers shall take the following oath of office before serving in their official office. This oath of office will be taken following the underclassmen awards ceremony. Officers will also sign the Constitution and the Code of Conduct.
I, state name…being fully aware of the responsibilities and obligations as…State office…., do solemnly promise to discharge the duties of my office as stated in the Constitution of the Student Government Association of Father Lopez and in accordance with all of the by-laws passed by the Student Government. I do further state that I will at all times fulfill all of my obligations to the student body, which I represent, and I will at all times, conduct myself according to the high standards of Father Lopez Catholic High School. In accepting this office, I fully understand that any failure on my part to fulfill my obligations and duties are acceptable grounds for my removal.
ARTICLE VIII: METHOD OF REMOVAL
Student Government Officer or Class Officers can be removed for not upholding the Student Government Code of Conduct.
Student Government Officers or Class Officers can be removed for not maintaining the required GPA stated in the constitution.
In the event of the removal or loss of an officer, the majority vote of the full Student Government shall recommend a substitute who will be accepted as an officer.
In the event an officer is asked to leave or does not fulfill their duties they will not be allowed to run for office in the future.
ARTICLE IX: MEETINGS
The Student Government will meet during lunch on the assigned day .Officers will meet the bi-monthly with their moderator.
The Student Government Officers shall have one meeting during summer vacation.
Meetings are usually on a set schedule, but the Moderates may call special meetings.
Meetings held with the administration of Father Lopez (the principal and assistant principal) will be arranged by the principal's the meeting will convene in allocation designed by the Principal.
ARTICLE X: VETO AND POWER OR SGA
The principal, by virtue of his or her responsibilities by the authority vested by the Diocese of Orlando, has veto power over all student participation in school activities and may suspend such participation. All action by the student body and the Student Government must have the approval of the school administration.
The Student Government can make suggestions for the betterment of the school subject to the approval of the administration.
ARTICLE XI: MAJORITY VOTE
The majority vote of the full student government shall be considered 51%
The majority vote of Student Government Officers shall be considered 75%
ARTICLE XII: ADVISOR
The Father Lopez Student Government Class Advisors shall be present at meeting but shall have no vote except to break a tie. The duty of the advisor is to give advice, assistance, and guidance as needed.
ARTICLE XIII. COMMITTEES
Committees may be formed whenever deemed necessary by the Student Body President to focus on one aspect of the Student Government duties.
i. The Student Government Officers shall appoint the members of all committees with the adviser's approval.
ii. Student Government Officers are responsible to serve on all committees and direct the operations of all such committees.
iii. Any student of Father Lopez is eligible to be appointed to serve on a committee or any number of committees, which will assist the Student Government Association.
iv. Some of the Student Government Officers may be asked to serve on various committees.
v. The officers and/or the advisor may dissolve committees that are deemed ineffective. New committees and/or new committee members may be formed.
vi. Any student found to be irresponsible on a committee would be asked to leave by the Student Government Advisor and will never be appointed to serve on a committee again.
ARTICLE XV: AMENDMENT
A 51% majority vote of the full Father Lopez Student Government, and a 75% majority vote of Student Government Officers, may attend this Constitution.
Only Student Government Officers and the Student Government Advisor have the authority to suggest amending any particular article or bylaw.
ARTICLE V: REBUTTAL OF LAWS
A 51% majority vote of the full Father Lopez Student Government, and a 75% majority vote of all the Student Government Officers, may allow for the rebuttal of this constitution.
Only Student Government Officers and the Student Government Advisor have the authority to suggest rebutting any particular article of bylaw.

This agenda is to be used at full Student Government Meetings only.
ARTICLE II: ELECTIONS
Student Government Officers shall conduct the election. Students vote by secret ballot at an assigned time to be decided yearly.
Complete ballots will be placed in a ballot box and will be counted by the Student Government Advisors If the Volusia Department of Election runs the election the county will tally the votes.
The number of votes each candidate received in an election will not be revealed to anyone.
